Poorly done drainage can pose serious safety hazards, such as flooding and soil erosion. Too much accumulation of water on the ground will make soil soggy and muddy. These conditions can potentially ruin a garden and may also pose health risks to people. You can prevent these problems by installing an effective drainage system such as the French drain. French drains are trenches dug into the ground that redirects the flow of water from areas you want to keep dry. You need the help of professionals when installing this drainage type to ensure its proper functioning.
Installing a French drain is a fantastic way to direct water away from your foundation. If you can keep water away from your foundation walls, you will be more likely to have a dry basement!
French drains are typically placed around the exterior of the foundation and are used to divert standing or accumulated water that can cause structural damage. Similar to a roof gutter where rainwater is directed down a downspout, French drains handle surface water at ground level. The simple design consists of a sloping trench filled with gravel and perforated pipes. As rainwater and other surface water penetrates the ground, it is filtered through the gravel in the pipe and channeled through the trench to a collection point away from the foundation. Sometimes an existing system can fail, allowing water to seep into the foundation. In this case, an interior French drain system can be installed under the basement floor. The principle is similar to an outdoor system with a sloping trench, piping and gravel. The water is redirected to a sump pump and then transported through pipes to an exterior storm drain.
